Site preparation on the Rist Canyon Vineyards was completed in the fall of 2000 and the planting was established in the spring of 2001 from cuttings that were rooted during March and April of that year. The beginning was removal of trees from the growing area. This allows for maximum sunlight penetration into the vineyard area. Tree removal was accomplished in the summer of 2000. Rows were hand dug to a depth of 2.5-3 feet in the fall of 2000. Many areas of the vineyard contained large rocks. All rocks which would interfere with vine growth were removed. The soil was then left to mellow over the winter before planting. |
Cuttings were obtained for many of the varieties and were rooted with bottom heat in March and April of 2001. Once roots were established, the cuttings were placed in a greenhouse to bud out and await planting. Grapes were planted and innoculated with VAM fungi. Grow tubes were put in place around the young cuttings and a drip irrigation system was installed. The irrigation will eventually be placed underground. With the grapes all planted, the trellis was installed. Endposts (nine foot x six inches) were dug into the ground to a depth of three feet. Intermediate posts (8 foot x four inches) were placed to a depth of two feet. The trellis wires were attached at various intervals and were placed so that vines could be trained to either a VSP, Scott Henry, or Syzlov system to evaluate which trellising method imparts the best hardening off for winter hardiness. |
